A technique for estimating the number of functioning motor units in a muscle.

Full Definition

Motor unit number estimation (MUNE) is an electrophysiological technique used to estimate the total number of functioning motor units in a muscle or muscle group. The method involves recording compound muscle action potentials while progressively activating individual motor units through incremental stimulation or voluntary activation. By dividing the maximum compound muscle action potential amplitude by the average single motor unit potential amplitude, an estimate of motor unit number is obtained. MUNE is valuable for monitoring disease progression in motor neuron diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, where motor unit loss is a key pathological feature.
