Time-frequency analysis is a sophisticated signal processing technique used in neurophysiology to examine how the frequency content of neural signals evolves over time. Unlike traditional spectral analysis which provides frequency information averaged over the entire recording period, time-frequency methods such as wavelet transforms, short-time Fourier transforms, and spectrograms reveal dynamic changes in oscillatory activity. This analysis is particularly valuable for studying transient events like seizures, sleep spindles, or task-related brain responses, where frequency content changes rapidly. The technique produces time-frequency plots that show both when specific frequencies occur and their relative power, providing insights into the temporal dynamics of brain oscillations.
