Full Definition

Visual evoked potential (VEP) is an electrophysiological test that measures the electrical activity generated by the visual cortex in response to visual stimuli. The test typically uses pattern-reversal checkerboards or flash stimuli while recording from electrodes placed over the occipital region. VEP testing evaluates the entire visual pathway from the retina through the optic nerves, chiasm, tracts, and visual cortex. The test is particularly useful for detecting optic nerve dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, and other disorders affecting the visual pathway, even when visual symptoms are subtle or absent.
