adrenal incidentaloma

Adrenal mass discovered incidentally on imaging performed for unrelated clinical indications.

Full Definition

An adrenal incidentaloma is an adrenal mass measuring at least 1 cm discovered incidentally during imaging studies performed for unrelated clinical reasons. These lesions require careful evaluation to determine whether they are functioning (hormone-producing) or non-functioning, and whether they are benign or malignant. The workup typically includes biochemical testing for excess hormone production and imaging characteristics analysis. Most incidentalomas are benign, non-functioning adenomas, but some may represent pheochromocytomas, aldosteronomas, or rarely, adrenal malignancies. Management depends on size, imaging characteristics, and functional status.

Usage

Usage note: Do not hyphenate as standalone noun; hyphenate only when used as compound modifier.
