Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) is a neuropeptide produced by neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus that plays a crucial role in feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. It acts as a potent orexigenic signal by antagonizing melanocortin-3 and melanocortin-4 receptors, thereby promoting food intake and reducing energy expenditure. AgRP neurons are activated during fasting states and inhibited by leptin and insulin signaling. Dysregulation of AgRP signaling has been implicated in obesity and metabolic disorders.
