Functionalism in neuroendocrine tumor terminology refers to the classification of tumors based on their ability to secrete biologically active hormones in quantities sufficient to produce clinical symptoms or syndromes. Functional neuroendocrine tumors produce specific clinical syndromes such as carcinoid syndrome, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, insulinoma syndrome, or glucagonoma syndrome, depending on the predominant hormone secreted. Non-functional tumors may still produce hormones detectable biochemically but in insufficient quantities to cause clinical symptoms, or may produce clinically inactive peptides. This distinction is crucial for clinical management, as functional tumors often require specific medical therapy to control hormonal hypersecretion symptoms in addition to standard oncological treatment approaches.
