Inhibitory peptide hormone that suppresses growth hormone release and has widespread regulatory effects throughout the body.

Full Definition

Somatostatin is a cyclic peptide hormone that exists in two main forms: somatostatin-14 and somatostatin-28. Originally discovered as a growth hormone-inhibiting factor, somatostatin is produced by hypothalamic neurons and also by D-cells in the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. It acts through G-protein coupled receptors to inhibit hormone secretion, including growth hormone, insulin, and glucagon, and also affects neurotransmission.
