Tanycytes are specialized ependymal cells found in the wall of the third ventricle in the hypothalamic region that possess unique morphological and functional characteristics. These cells have long processes that extend from the ventricular surface into brain parenchyma, forming intimate connections with blood vessels and neurons. Tanycytes are classified into subtypes (α and β) based on location and function. They play crucial roles in regulating the transport of hormones, nutrients, and other molecules between cerebrospinal fluid and hypothalamic tissue, participating in the regulation of energy homeostasis, reproduction, and circadian rhythms. Recent research suggests tanycytes may also function as neural stem cells in the adult hypothalamus.
