VIPoma

Pronunciation: VIP-oh-mah

A rare neuroendocrine tumor that secretes excessive vasoactive intestinal peptide, causing profuse watery diarrhea.

Full Definition

A VIPoma is a vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-secreting neuroendocrine tumor that causes Verner-Morrison syndrome, also known as WDHA syndrome (watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria). These tumors are most commonly located in the pancreas but can occur in other sites including the small bowel and sympathetic ganglia. The excessive VIP secretion leads to massive secretory diarrhea (often exceeding 3 liters per day), severe electrolyte depletion, and metabolic acidosis. Diagnosis requires demonstration of elevated plasma VIP levels in the setting of characteristic clinical symptoms. Most VIPomas are malignant at presentation, with frequent metastatic disease to liver and lymph nodes.
