A brain network active during rest and introspective tasks, including medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate, and angular gyrus.

Full Definition

The default mode network (DMN) is a functionally connected brain network that exhibits high metabolic activity during rest and decreases activation during externally focused, goal-directed tasks. Key DMN regions include the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, precuneus, and angular gyrus, with additional contributions from the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe. This network is associated with self-referential thinking, autobiographical memory, and theory of mind. DMN dysfunction has been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric conditions including Alzheimer's disease, depression, and attention disorders.
