The default mode network (DMN) is a functionally connected brain network that exhibits high metabolic activity during rest and decreases activation during externally focused, goal-directed tasks. Key DMN regions include the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, precuneus, and angular gyrus, with additional contributions from the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe. This network is associated with self-referential thinking, autobiographical memory, and theory of mind.
