Gradient coils are specialized electromagnetic coils in MRI scanners that generate linear magnetic field gradients in the x, y, and z directions, enabling spatial encoding of the MRI signal. These rapidly switching magnetic fields allow slice selection, frequency encoding, and phase encoding necessary for image formation. Gradient coil performance directly impacts image quality, with stronger gradients enabling faster acquisition, higher resolution, and advanced techniques like diffusion imaging, though they also contribute to acoustic noise and patient heating concerns.
