intracranial pressure monitoring

Also written as: ICP — intracranial pressure

Continuous measurement of pressure within the cranial vault using invasive sensors or non-invasive imaging methods.

Full Definition

Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring involves the continuous assessment of pressure within the rigid cranial vault to detect dangerous elevations that may compromise cerebral perfusion and brain function. While invasive monitoring using intraventricular catheters or parenchymal sensors remains the gold standard, non-invasive MRI techniques including phase-contrast flow measurements, venous pressure assessment, and optic nerve sheath diameter evaluation are increasingly used for screening and serial monitoring. Elevated ICP may result from mass lesions, cerebral edema, hydrocephalus, or reduced cerebrospinal fluid absorption.

Usage

Usage note: Specify monitoring method (invasive vs. non-invasive); report pressure values with units.

In Context

  • "Non-invasive intracranial pressure monitoring using MRI venography showed elevated pressure consistent with idiopathic intracranial hypertension." — Headache workup
  • "ICP monitoring revealed sustained pressures above 25 mmHg, prompting immediate neurosurgical intervention." — Critical care report
