Normalization is a fundamental preprocessing step in neuroimaging that transforms individual brain images into a common stereotactic space to enable group-level statistical analysis and cross-subject comparisons. The process typically involves non-linear registration algorithms that account for individual differences in brain shape, size, and anatomical configuration. Common target spaces include MNI (Montreal Neurological Institute) and Talairach coordinates. Accurate normalization is essential for valid group analyses, atlas-based region definition, and meta-analytic studies. However, normalization can introduce smoothing effects and may not perfectly preserve individual anatomical details.
