Abnormal reduction in cerebral blood flow detected through perfusion imaging techniques.

Full Definition

Perfusion deficit refers to regions of abnormally reduced cerebral blood flow identified through perfusion imaging modalities such as CT perfusion, MR perfusion, or SPECT. These deficits indicate compromised tissue perfusion that may progress to irreversible injury if not promptly addressed. In acute stroke evaluation, perfusion deficits help identify salvageable tissue (penumbra) and guide therapeutic decision-making regarding revascularization procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from infarct core (irreversibly damaged tissue) and penumbra (at-risk but salvageable tissue).
