Susceptibility mapping is an advanced MRI technique that quantifies local variations in magnetic susceptibility to identify paramagnetic and diamagnetic substances within brain tissue. This method is particularly sensitive to iron deposition, calcification, and blood products, making it valuable for detecting microbleeds, iron accumulation in neurodegenerative diseases, and vascular malformations. Quantitative susceptibility mapping provides more precise measurements than conventional susceptibility-weighted imaging.

Usage note: Distinguish from susceptibility-weighted imaging, which is qualitative rather than quantitative.
