T2-weighted imaging

MRI sequence that emphasizes differences in T2 relaxation times between tissues, producing bright signal from fluid-containing structures.

Full Definition

T2-weighted imaging is a fundamental MRI pulse sequence that highlights the transverse relaxation properties of tissues. In T2-weighted images, cerebrospinal fluid appears bright white, while most brain tissue appears in various shades of gray. This sequence is particularly valuable for detecting pathology such as edema, inflammation, and lesions, which typically appear hyperintense (bright) due to increased water content. T2-weighted imaging is essential for stroke evaluation, tumor detection, and assessment of white matter diseases.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate when used as an adjective modifier.
