Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a major structural protein found in the myelin sheaths of the central nervous system. It comprises approximately 30% of total myelin protein and serves as an important biomarker for myelin destruction. Elevated CSF levels indicate active demyelination, making it valuable for monitoring disease progression in multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating conditions. The protein can also be detected in serum following significant CNS trauma or inflammation.
