Full Definition

An apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map is a parametric image derived from diffusion-weighted imaging that quantifies the rate of water diffusion in tissues. Lower ADC values typically indicate restricted diffusion due to cellular swelling, membrane disruption, or increased cellularity. Higher values suggest increased diffusion from tissue damage or edema. ADC maps are essential for distinguishing between cytotoxic and vasogenic edema and are particularly useful in stroke imaging and tumor characterization.
