Event-related potentials (ERPs) are voltage changes in EEG recordings that are temporally locked to specific sensory, cognitive, or motor events. In neuroinformatics, ERPs are extracted by averaging EEG epochs time-locked to stimulus onset across many trials, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio by reducing random background activity while preserving systematic neural responses. ERPs provide millisecond-precision information about the timing of neural processing and are characterized by specific components (such as P300, N400) that reflect distinct cognitive operations. The technique requires careful experimental design, artifact rejection, and statistical analysis to identify reliable ERP components. ERPs are invaluable for studying cognitive processes, clinical populations, and brain-behavior relationships with high temporal resolution.
