Full Definition

Fixel-based analysis (FBA) is an advanced diffusion MRI analysis framework that enables investigation of white matter properties at the level of individual fiber populations (fixels) within each voxel. Unlike traditional voxel-based approaches that assume single fiber orientations, FBA can resolve and separately analyze multiple crossing fiber populations, providing more specific measures of fiber density, cross-section, and combined metrics. This approach is particularly valuable for studying white matter changes in development, aging, and disease, as it can detect changes that may be missed by conventional DTI metrics. FBA requires high-quality diffusion data and sophisticated preprocessing to accurately estimate fiber orientation distributions.
