Full Definition

The hemodynamic response function (HRF) is a mathematical model that describes the temporal relationship between neural activity and the resulting blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal measured in fMRI. The canonical HRF is characterized by a rapid rise to peak amplitude 4-6 seconds after stimulus onset, followed by a gradual decline and small undershoot. Individual and regional variations in HRF shape can affect the interpretation of fMRI results, and advanced analysis methods may estimate subject-specific HRFs. The HRF is fundamental to fMRI statistical modeling and experimental design optimization.
