radiomics

High-throughput extraction and analysis of quantitative features from medical images.

Full Definition

Radiomics is an emerging field that involves the extraction of large amounts of quantitative features from medical images using computational algorithms. These features, which are not visible to the human eye, include texture, shape, and intensity characteristics that can be correlated with clinical outcomes, treatment response, or disease prognosis. In neuroimaging, radiomics approaches are increasingly used to identify imaging biomarkers for neurological diseases, predict treatment responses, and support precision medicine initiatives. The field bridges medical imaging, computer science, and clinical medicine to transform images into mineable data.

Usage

Usage note: Often confused with 'radiogenomics' which specifically correlates imaging with genomic data.

In Context

  • "The radiomics approach identified novel MRI features associated with glioma survival outcomes." — Oncology research paper
  • "Radiomics features were extracted from T1-weighted images to predict cognitive decline progression." — Neurodegeneration study methods
