In diffusion imaging, a tensor is a 3x3 matrix that characterizes the magnitude and directionality of water diffusion at each voxel. The diffusion tensor provides information about tissue microstructure, including fiber orientation and integrity. From the tensor, various scalar measures can be derived including fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and principal eigenvectors. Understanding tensor properties is essential for interpreting DTI data and assessing white matter pathology in neurological conditions.
