Closed-loop stimulation represents an advanced approach to neuromodulation where the stimulation system continuously monitors physiological signals and automatically adjusts stimulation parameters in real-time based on this feedback. Unlike traditional open-loop systems that deliver constant predetermined stimulation, closed-loop systems use biomarkers such as local field potentials, accelerometry data, or other physiological signals to detect when therapeutic intervention is needed. This approach can potentially improve therapeutic outcomes while reducing side effects and battery consumption. Applications include responsive epilepsy stimulation and adaptive deep brain stimulation for movement disorders.
