Focused Ultrasound

A non-invasive neuromodulation technique using high-intensity focused ultrasound waves to create precise thermal or mechanical lesions in deep brain structures.

Full Definition

Focused ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging neuromodulation technology that uses multiple ultrasound transducers to converge acoustic energy on a specific target within the brain or peripheral nervous system. The technique can operate in two modes: high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for thermal ablation, and low-intensity focused ultrasound for temporary neural modulation. Under MRI guidance, FUS can create precise lesions without requiring surgical intervention. Clinical applications include treatment of essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, and chronic pain conditions. The technique offers the advantage of being completely non-invasive while achieving millimeter-level precision in targeting.
