Full Definition

Impedance in neuromodulation refers to the opposition to electrical current flow through the electrode-tissue interface, measured in ohms. Lead impedance measurements are routinely performed to assess the integrity of the implanted system and optimize stimulation parameters. Normal impedance values vary depending on electrode design, surface area, and tissue characteristics, but typically range from 300-1500 ohms for spinal cord stimulation systems. Abnormally high impedance may indicate lead fracture or poor tissue contact, while very low impedance may suggest insulation breach or short circuit. Impedance monitoring is essential for device programming, troubleshooting, and long-term system maintenance.
