Stimulation strategy that activates electrode contacts positioned laterally to target specific neural structures or avoid side effects.

Full Definition

Lateral programming utilizes electrode contacts positioned on the sides of the lead array to direct stimulation toward or away from specific neural targets. This approach is particularly useful in spinal cord stimulation where lateral contacts can preferentially stimulate dorsal columns while avoiding dorsal root activation, or in deep brain stimulation where lateral contacts might target specific functional zones within nuclei. Lateral programming helps optimize therapeutic coverage while minimizing unwanted effects.
