Pocket Revision

A surgical procedure to modify or repair the subcutaneous pocket housing an implanted neurostimulation device.

Full Definition

Pocket revision is a surgical intervention performed to address complications or issues related to the subcutaneous pocket that houses implanted neurostimulation devices such as pulse generators or drug pumps. Common indications include pocket infection requiring washout and antibiotic therapy, device erosion through the skin, pocket hematoma or seroma formation, inadequate pocket size causing device prominence or discomfort, and pocket capsular contracture. The procedure may involve pocket exploration, irrigation, debridement, pocket enlargement or repositioning, and occasionally creation of an entirely new pocket at a different anatomical location. Pocket revisions require careful attention to sterile technique and may necessitate device explantation if infection cannot be cleared.

Usage note: Specify the anatomical location and indication when documenting pocket revisions.
