Full Definition

Tonic stimulation is the traditional neurostimulation paradigm characterized by continuous delivery of regular, high-frequency electrical pulses to neural tissue. Operating typically between 40-100 Hz, tonic stimulation has been the standard approach in spinal cord stimulation for decades and works primarily through gate control mechanisms to provide pain relief. Patients usually experience paresthesias (tingling sensations) in the stimulated region. While effective for many patients, tonic stimulation may be associated with neural accommodation over time, leading to the development of alternative stimulation paradigms.
