Conduction Velocity

The speed at which electrical impulses travel along nerve fibers, measured in meters per second during nerve conduction studies. A key parameter for assessing nerve function and detecting demyelinating disorders.

Full Definition

Conduction velocity represents the speed of electrical impulse propagation along nerve fibers, calculated by dividing the distance between stimulation points by the difference in onset latencies. Normal motor nerve conduction velocities range from 50-70 m/s in the upper extremities and 40-60 m/s in the lower extremities, while sensory nerves conduct slightly faster. Reduced conduction velocity typically indicates demyelination, while preserved velocities with reduced amplitudes suggest axonal loss. Conduction velocity measurements are fundamental to distinguishing between demyelinating and axonal neuropathies and are essential for proper electrodiagnostic classification of peripheral nerve disorders.
