Myositis ossificans is the formation of bone and cartilage within muscle tissue, occurring either as a localized response to trauma (myositis ossificans traumatica) or as part of a systemic genetic disorder (myositis ossificans progressiva, now called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva). The traumatic form typically develops 2-4 weeks after muscle injury, while the hereditary form follows a predictable anatomical progression. Diagnosis is confirmed by characteristic imaging findings showing peripheral calcification with a lucent center ('eggshell' pattern). Differentiation from malignant soft tissue tumors is crucial, as biopsy of suspected myositis ossificans can trigger further ossification.
