The neuromuscular junction is the specialized synapse where a motor neuron communicates with a muscle fiber. This structure includes the presynaptic nerve terminal, synaptic cleft, and postsynaptic muscle membrane with acetylcholine receptors. Disorders affecting this junction, such as myasthenia gravis and botulism, cause characteristic patterns of muscle weakness and fatigue.
