Full Definition

Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life-threatening syndrome involving the rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle fibers, leading to the release of intracellular contents including myoglobin, creatine kinase, and other cellular components into the circulation. This condition can result from various causes including trauma, extreme exercise, drug toxicity, infections, and genetic muscle disorders. The released myoglobin can cause acute kidney injury, while electrolyte imbalances may lead to cardiac arrhythmias. Early recognition and aggressive fluid therapy are essential for preventing complications. Laboratory findings include markedly elevated creatine kinase levels and myoglobinuria.
