dystrophic calcification

Pathological calcium deposits that form in damaged or necrotic brain tissue, appearing as basophilic deposits.

Full Definition

Dystrophic calcification refers to the abnormal deposition of calcium salts in previously damaged or necrotic brain tissue. Unlike metastatic calcification, which occurs in the setting of systemic calcium metabolism disorders, dystrophic calcification develops locally in areas of tissue injury, infarction, or chronic inflammation. These deposits appear as dark blue to purple basophilic material in routine hematoxylin and eosin preparations and can be confirmed with calcium stains. Dystrophic calcification is commonly seen in old infarcts, chronic hematomas, parasitic infections, and some brain tumors, particularly craniopharyngiomas and oligodendrogliomas.
