medulloepithelioma
Pronunciation: meh-dul-oh-ep-ih-thee-lee-OH-mah
A rare primitive neuroectodermal tumor that recapitulates the embryonic neural tube.
Full Definition
Medulloepithelioma is a rare WHO grade IV primitive neuroectodermal tumor that histologically mimics the embryonic neural tube or medullary epithelium. These tumors typically arise in young children and demonstrate characteristic flexner-wintersteiner-like rosettes and true rosettes. The tumor cells are arranged in tubular or rosette-like structures reminiscent of the primitive neural tube. Prognosis is generally poor due to the aggressive nature and tendency for CSF dissemination.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from ependymoma by embryonic neural tube morphology.
