Full Definition

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are abnormal intracellular accumulations of hyperphosphorylated tau protein that form twisted filaments within neurons. They are one of the two major pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, along with amyloid plaques. NFTs are also found in other neurodegenerative disorders collectively termed tauopathies. The distribution and density of neurofibrillary tangles correlates with cognitive decline and is used for staging Alzheimer's disease pathology according to Braak criteria. Editors should distinguish NFTs from other protein aggregates and understand their diagnostic significance in neuropathological contexts.
