Spongiform degeneration describes a characteristic pattern of brain tissue damage where the neuropil develops a spongy, honeycomb-like appearance due to the formation of numerous small vacuoles. This change results from neuronal loss, dendritic swelling, and astrocytic proliferation. While most famously associated with prion diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, spongiform change can also occur in other conditions including Alzheimer disease, metabolic disorders, and toxic exposures. The severity and distribution of spongiform change can provide diagnostic clues about the underlying pathological process.
