Full Definition

Medication-induced parkinsonism is an iatrogenic movement disorder that develops as a side effect of medications that block or deplete dopamine, particularly antipsychotic medications and certain antiemetics. The condition presents with classic parkinsonian symptoms including bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability that are clinically indistinguishable from idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Unlike Parkinson's disease, medication-induced parkinsonism is potentially reversible upon discontinuation or reduction of the offending medication, though recovery may take weeks to months. Risk factors include advanced age, female gender, and higher medication doses.
