perseveration

Persistent repetition of words, phrases, or behaviors beyond their appropriateness, indicating cognitive or neurological dysfunction.

Full Definition

Perseveration refers to the inappropriate persistence or repetition of a response, behavior, thought, or speech pattern beyond its relevant context. This phenomenon can manifest in various forms, including verbal perseveration (repeating words or phrases), motor perseveration (repeating movements or actions), and cognitive perseveration (inability to shift mental sets). Perseveration is commonly observed in conditions affecting frontal lobe function, such as dementia, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and autism spectrum disorders. It represents a failure of cognitive flexibility and executive control. In neuropsychiatric assessments, perseveration is often evaluated through tasks requiring set-shifting abilities, such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and its presence may indicate specific patterns of brain dysfunction.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from obsessive-compulsive behaviors, which typically have anxiety-reducing functions.
