Full Definition

Abulia represents a disorder of diminished motivation and goal-directed behavior, often observed following damage to the frontal lobes, anterior cingulate cortex, or basal ganglia. Patients exhibit profound apathy and difficulty initiating activities despite preserved cognitive abilities. This condition differs from depression in that emotional distress is typically absent. Abulia exists on a spectrum with akinetic mutism representing the most severe form.
