ideational planning

Executive function component involving the formulation and organization of complex, multi-step action sequences before execution.

Full Definition

Ideational planning refers to the cognitive process of conceptualizing and mentally organizing complex activities that require multiple steps or components before physical execution begins. This executive function involves breaking down goals into constituent parts, determining the proper sequence of actions, and anticipating potential obstacles or requirements. Deficits in ideational planning are commonly observed following frontal lobe damage and may manifest as difficulty organizing daily activities, poor meal preparation, or inability to complete multi-step tasks efficiently. Assessment often involves complex figure copying tasks, tower tests, or real-world planning scenarios. Distinguished from ideomotor functions, ideational planning focuses on the conceptual organization rather than motor execution of planned activities.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other executive functions like working memory or cognitive flexibility in clinical reports.
