semantic fluency

A verbal task requiring generation of words within specific categories within time constraints.

Full Definition

Semantic fluency, also called category fluency, is a neuropsychological assessment that measures language and executive functioning by requiring participants to generate words within specific semantic categories (such as animals, foods, or clothing) within timed intervals, typically 60 seconds. This task primarily assesses semantic memory, lexical access, and cognitive flexibility while engaging temporal lobe structures. Performance patterns differ from phonemic fluency, with semantic fluency being more sensitive to temporal lobe pathology and language disorders.

Usage

Usage note: Contrast with phonemic fluency when describing dissociations in performance.
