Inability to identify objects by touch alone, indicating sensory cortex damage.

Full Definition

The inability to recognize and identify objects through tactile sensation alone, despite intact primary touch sensation. Astereognosis results from damage to the somatosensory association areas of the parietal cortex and represents a form of tactile agnosia. Patients can feel that an object is present but cannot determine its shape, size, texture, or identity through touch.

Usage

Usage note: Prefix 'a-' indicates absence. Test by having patient identify objects placed in hand while blindfolded.
