Wernicke's area
Brain region responsible for language comprehension, typically located in the left temporal lobe.
Full Definition
A critical brain region located in the posterior superior temporal gyrus of the dominant hemisphere (usually left) that is essential for language comprehension. Damage to Wernicke's area results in receptive aphasia, characterized by fluent but meaningless speech and poor comprehension. This area works in conjunction with Broca's area to enable normal language function.
Usage
Usage note: Always capitalize as it is named after Carl Wernicke. Distinguish from Broca's area, which controls speech production.
