Eloquent brain refers to regions of the central nervous system that are responsible for critical neurological functions such as speech, language comprehension, motor control, sensory processing, and visual perception. In neurosurgical oncology, identification and preservation of eloquent areas is paramount during tumor resection, as damage to these regions results in permanent, significant neurological deficits that severely impact quality of life. Eloquent areas include the primary motor cortex, primary sensory cortex, speech areas (Broca's and Wernicke's areas), visual cortex, brainstem, and certain deep structures like the internal capsule. Tumors located in or near eloquent brain require specialized surgical approaches, often involving awake craniotomy or advanced mapping techniques to maximize resection while preserving function.
