pilocytic astrocytoma

Also written as: JPA

A benign WHO grade I astrocytic tumor most commonly occurring in children, typically in the cerebellum and optic pathway.

Full Definition

Pilocytic astrocytoma is a WHO grade I benign brain tumor primarily affecting children and young adults, representing the most common primary brain tumor in the pediatric population. These tumors most frequently arise in the cerebellum, hypothalamic/chiasmatic region, and brainstem, though they can occur throughout the CNS. Histologically, they are characterized by a biphasic pattern with compact areas containing Rosenthal fibers and loose areas with microcysts and eosinophilic granular bodies. Complete surgical resection is usually curative, though tumors in critical locations may require alternative approaches such as observation or focused radiotherapy.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as JPA in pediatric neurosurgical literature.
