ventricular system

Network of fluid-filled cavities within the brain where cerebrospinal fluid is produced and circulates.

Full Definition

The ventricular system consists of four interconnected cavities (lateral, third, and fourth ventricles) within the brain that produce and circulate cerebrospinal fluid. In neurosurgical oncology, tumors can obstruct these pathways causing hydrocephalus, or arise from ventricular walls (intraventricular tumors). Understanding ventricular anatomy is crucial for surgical planning and assessing tumor location relative to CSF flow patterns.

Usage

Usage note: Always singular when referring to the complete system; plural 'ventricles' when referring to individual chambers.

In Context

  • "The tumor extended into the ventricular system, requiring careful surgical approach to avoid CSF leak." — Operative report
  • "Imaging revealed mass effect on the ventricular system with resulting obstructive hydrocephalus." — Radiology report
