A phenomenon where blood transfusion in newborns can mask or alter the detection of certain genetic conditions in screening tests. Transfused blood from healthy donors can dilute abnormal metabolites or introduce normal enzymes, potentially causing false-negative results. This is particularly concerning for conditions like sickle cell disease, where the presence of normal adult hemoglobin from the transfusion can mask the infant's abnormal hemoglobin pattern.
