Dural puncture refers to the perforation of the dura mater, the outermost membrane surrounding the spinal cord. In obstetric anesthesia, this can occur accidentally during epidural placement when the needle penetrates too deeply, or intentionally during spinal anesthesia. Accidental dural puncture is a recognized complication that can lead to post-dural puncture headache and requires careful monitoring and potential treatment. The incidence is higher in obstetric patients due to anatomical changes during pregnancy.
