HELLP Syndrome

Pronunciation: HELP syndrome

Also written as: HELLP — Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, Low Platelets

A severe form of preeclampsia characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count.

Full Definition

HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening variant of preeclampsia characterized by hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), elevated liver enzymes indicating hepatocellular damage, and low platelets (thrombocytopenia). This condition poses significant challenges for obstetric anesthesia management due to coagulopathy risks, potential for neuraxial hematoma, and the need for emergency delivery. Platelet count below 100,000/μL typically contraindicates neuraxial anesthesia. The syndrome can develop rapidly and may present without classic preeclampsia symptoms, requiring immediate recognition and multidisciplinary management.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize as HELLP; distinguish from other causes of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy.

In Context

  • "HELLP syndrome was diagnosed based on platelet count of 80,000 and elevated AST levels." — Laboratory report interpretation
  • "The presence of HELLP syndrome contraindicated epidural anesthesia due to thrombocytopenia." — Anesthetic decision documentation
